Job description

This post will based in the Inflammation Biology Group headed by Prof. Toby Lawrence at the Centre for Inflammation Biology & Cancer Immunology (CIBCI) and in close collaboration with the Systems Cancer Immunology Group headed by Dr. Shahram Kordasti, both based at Guy’s Hospital campus. CIBCI aims to leverage expertise in inflammation biology to extend fundamental and applied knowledge of tumour immunobiology. In this context, the post holder will develop projects applying novel work flows and analytical pipelines for the acquisition of multidimensional data sets, including single cell RNA sequencing, imaging mass cytometry and spatial transcriptomics, from both patient samples and experimental models, with the ultimate goal of deconstructing the roles of myeloid cells in the tumour immune-microenvrionment and their bearing on cancer using functional genomics. The post holder will also be involved in the training and supervision of PhD students and junior research associates involved in related projects.
This post will be offered on a 3 years fixed-term contract with the possibility to extend for a further 2 years
This is a full-time post.

Key responsibilities

• To work on the immunological and molecular profiling of patient samples and tissues from animal models and patients.   
• To develop mechanistic insights derived from such profiling activities in collaboration with clinical and basic scientists 
• To use a variety of technologies to investigate the functional immunological status of cancers and the influence of their microenvironments  
• To create, implement and use analytical and bioinformatics tools to analyse and interpret multidimensional data. 
• To establish the pipelines for collection and analysis of patient samples and enable the development of experimental protocols. 
• To support writing of grants and manuscripts for maintaining the continual research in this domain. 
• To promote research initiatives and original contributions to the research programmes of the Centre, Department, School and Faculty.  
• Design and implement systems for laboratory information management (both electronic and manual) and archiving of analytical material. 
• Develop and improve their own scientific knowledge and awareness of developments within the field of molecular and cellular immunology via attendance of relevant meetings and conferences, both nationally and internationally. 
• Develop original novel research projects based on thorough assessment of the published literature and advice from the head of the research group (Prof Lawrence). 
• Prepare grant applications, project justifications, business cases and project reports. 
• Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed academic journals. 
• Present research work at national and international meetings promoting the department whilst making useful contacts within the field, and to engage other scientists in strategy development. 
• Routinely supervise and train junior scientific and technical staff, students and visiting members of staff working in the laboratory. 
• Facilitate the professional development of junior staff through a mentoring approach. 
 

Skills knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria 
• PhD awarded in relevant discipline, or equivalent 
• Knowledge of relevant platforms and techniques 
• Knowledge of immunology, any previous lab experience is advantageous.  
• Knowledge/skills in the use of platforms monitoring patient immunological and/or microenvironment status 
• Past peer-reviewed publications(s) that involves the use of platforms monitoring patient immunological and/or microenvironment status 
• Advanced skills with Microsoft Packages such as Word and Excel 
• Knowledge of computational biology 
• Numeracy skills as required for the statistical analysis of experimental data, including familiarity with a specialist statistical software package (i.e. SPSS or similar) 
• Ability to analyse data with existing publicly available and commercial software solutions (e.g. R/Bioconductor, UMAP, viSNE, SPADE, FlowJo, CytoBank suite) 
• Develop novel tools using statistics, mathematics and machine learning approaches for the analysis of high dimensional data. 
• Interest in the field of translation cancer research

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
